IBMS (HK) branch organized a seminar on Laboratory Equipment Calibration on 8 November 2024 at the Lecture Hall of the Federation of Medical Societies. It was well attended by about 30 members, non-members and guests.   The speaker, Dr. Ivan Lam PhD, Sebia Inc.’s Scientific Affairs Manager, delivered an enchanting talk on new diagnostic tools for diagnosing autoimmune diseases. Such diseases have been notoriously difficult to diagnose accurately, and with recent technological advancements it has become more straightforward for laboratory scientists to report.  The audience were able to glean a lot of information from the one-hour talk.    The committee would hereby like to extend a very warm appreciation to the speaker for his time and shared knowledge, and for Biogene for generously sponsoring the event.     **Advanced notice for 2025 IBMS (HK) branch AGM and scientific seminar   The Executive Committee would like to announce that the 2025 AGM and scientific seminar will be held on 17 January 2025 at the Novotel Century Hotel, Wanchai.  Stay tuned for further information.

22 March 2023 We are pleased to announce a new series of IBMS Support Hub Zoom webinar sessions, with our first scheduled session taking place later this month. Following on from her article in The Biomedical Scientist magazine on ‘Assessing Employability Skills’, IBMS Council member, Tahmina Hussain, and Sue Jones (IBMS Executive Head of Education) are pleased to announce the return of our IBMS Support Hubs this year. The Support Hub sessions will take place online via Zoom on Wednesday lunchtimes. For 2023, there will be a new series of topics, specially selected to cover key skills gaps as identified in a recent employability study. You can download a full poster below to see all the session dates and titles. Set up to investigate employers’ expectations of pathology lab work, Tahmina’s study revealed an overlooked area in need of improvement – the skills and knowledge gap of new graduates. By re-establishing these Support Hub sessions, Tahmina and Sue aim to provide crucial advice to all attendees, with a particular focus on helping new graduates to better meet employers’ requirements.

22 March 2023 The IBMS-sponsored ABSW Media Fellowship has been awarded to Sheri Scott FIBMS To support our aims to promote biomedical science to the public and to help ensure our media presence, the IBMS is proud to sponsor a media placement for our members. For the third year, we have sponsored a place on the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) Media Fellowship scheme. The ABSW Fellowships provides a unique opportunity for practicing scientists, clinicians and engineers to spend two to six weeks working at the heart of a media outlet such as The Guardian, BBC Breakfast or Sky News. The chosen Fellow gains the chance to work within the media, understand why and how stories are selected and then collaborate with journalists. Following the selection process, the IBMS-sponsored ABSW Media Fellowship for 2023 has been awarded to Sheri Scott FIBMS. On winning the placement, Sheri stated: "I am excited and thrilled to be awarded the opportunity of the IBMS Media Fellowship. I have a passion for my profession and the role it plays in healthcare, for professional development, for environmental protection and for promoting public health. I eagerly look forward to developing new science communication skills, which will aid in the knowledge exchange of these topics, raise the profile of the biomedical scientist profession, while bringing back those skills to the university in order to develop our biomedical science students of the future." Sheri's placement will take place later in the year once a suitable media organisation has been identified and dates for Sheri to attend.
